My Favorite 3 Songs From My Favorite 3 Albums (2011)

As usual, I don’t remember what actually came out this year, but these are the only 3 (new) albums I actually recall enjoying, so they must be my favorite:

PJ Harvey - The Words That Maketh Murder (from Let England Shake)
This is also my favorite music video I’ve seen since I stopped caring about music videos (a really long time ago). This album is the most lyrically rich album Polly’s ever made and while it doesn’t necessarily provide instant gratification, it rewards with repeated listenings. This song is gorgeous and as complex and satisfying as a glass of Madeira.

Bill Callahan - Riding For the Feeling (from Apocalypse)
The album is sad, funny, simple, angry, perfect. This song is the happiest thing I heard all year. It made me happy, at least. Listening to this in the summer with the windows rolled down reminded me why I moved to the suburbs and bought a car. If freedom made a noise it would be Bill’s voice in this song.

Cass McCombs - Buried Alive (from Wit’s End)
This song sounds like what’s going on in my head all the time and I have to listen to the Bill Callahan song to make it stop. But sometimes I don’t want it to stop because it feels very familiar. This song and album is a bottle of beautiful anxiety and gorgeous claustrophobia. Happy Holidays.
